Her head is continually in the downward facing position and her slanted eyes portray certain sadness. These colours are supported by the pictures of the girl throughout the story. The colours from the very first page are dull and dark which lend themselves to portraying the sad and emotional feelings of the girl. One of the really effective visual literacy elements in this text is the use of colour. An example of this is the character describing her feeling, using metaphors such as monsters, storms and rainbows. The image of the girl is supposed to replace ourselves in this story, because as humans we like to describe our feelings with the use of metaphors. The text is a metaphor for the depressive feelings and emotions that we as humans often have to deal with. The text tells a story of a young girl that passes through numerous dark moments in her life, but then finds what she has been looking for at the end of the text. The text I have chosen for this week’s blog is “The red Tree” by Shaun Tan. Watson and Styles (1996, p.176) support this by suggesting that “students are now immersed in a range of semiotic systems such as advertising and various other graphic texts such as comics that they have learned to read/view before coming to school” “There is a widely held belief that young children are exposed to a much more visual world compared to the world their parents explored at the same age” (Anstey & Bull, 2004).
